Databricks launches AI-driven Data Intelligence Platform for Energy sector
Sat, 13th Apr 2024

Databricks has introduced its innovative Data Intelligence Platform for Energy. Constructed upon open lakehouse technology, this platform enables energy-based organisations to predict demand patterns, distribute data insights throughout their structures, and enhance their offerings.

Databricks' new creation offers energy entities the potential to identify uninterrupted streams of energy data and develop generative AI applications, all while maintaining the privacy of their data and their confidential intellectual property. Further, the platform allows these organisations to gain a holistic, real-time perspective on their operations. This capability facilitates the anticipatory addressing of maintenance needs, the reduction of unplanned downtime, and the accurate prediction of energy generation.

The energy sector is currently in the midst of a paradigm shift. The transition towards diverse energy sources is increasing the industry's need for a unified approach to data, analytics, and AI. With renewables now supplying almost 30% of the world's power, Databricks' Data Intelligence Platform allows its users to democratise access to their data. This encompasses asset, operation, environmental, and customer data. The platform's effectiveness has resulted in its adoption by major organisations, including the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), Chevron Phillips Chemical, Cosmo Energy, Shell, TotalEnergies and Wood Mackenzie, amongst others.

Dan Jeavons, Vice President of Digital Innovation at Shell, praises Databricks' transformative impact on the company's digital transformation, describing it as 'the engine that powers our data-driven innovation for asset operations.' David Sykes, Head of Data at Octopus Energy, concurs, stating that Databricks' platform is pivotal in processing and analysing large data sets generated by smart meters, thereby gaining deeper insights into customer behaviour and energy consumption.

The Data Intelligence Platform for Energy also helps to address critical challenges facing the energy industry, such as real-time asset performance management and maintenance, accurate and efficient renewable energy forecasting, and proactive, predictive grid optimisation. These capabilities assist organisations in monitoring performance in real-time, enhancing resource allocation, and improving overall grid reliability and resilience.

Additionally, the platform introduces pre-built data and AI solutions designed to accelerate the analytics process and assist enterprises in addressing high-value challenges. These include LLMs for knowledge base Q&A agents, IoT predictive maintenance, digital twins, wind turbine predictive maintenance, grid-edge analytics, and real-time data ingestion platform (RTDIP).

A selection of industry-leading Databricks partners also supports and drives this platform's vision. AVEVA, BKO, Capgemini, Celebal Technologies, CKDelta, Deloitte, Neudesic, and Seeq all offer pre-existing analytics solutions specifically customised for the energy industry and integrate seamlessly with Databricks' lakehouse architecture.
